The House In the Middle Of The Cornfield

Personal Ghost Stories from Nebraska Series

When I was in high school, a friend of mine told me about an abandoned haunted house in the country. She asked me to tag along to check it out one night and I reluctantly agreed. The house was in the middle of a cornfield, which added to the eeriness of the situation. The noises associated with the stalks rustling and the lack of visibility made things seem much scarier. When we reached the front door we found it unlock. I was told the house had remained vacant after a horrific incident occurred several years before.

I followed my friend up to the second floor

because she said that is where the murder happened. We wandered around the rooms. We walked into a room that had nothing more than a mattress on the floor and few items of clothing strewn around. Then we went to another small room where it is said that if you sit in the middle of the room with the lights off and wait a few moments you can hear someone coming up the stairs when no one else is in the house. After testing the theory with no results, we headed down the hall toward the nursery. This room gave me the heebie-jeebies. While in the nursery, my friend was standing near one of the two windows in the room and I suddenly felt like someone was approaching behind me. I turned around to see the door opening wider. I flashed my light in that direction but saw no one. I asked my friend if we could leave and she agreed and we made our way downstairs to what looked like a dining room. My friend said something and then we heard a crashing sound as something hit the floor. We left immediately after that, ran to the car, and drove away.

A few days later, after settling down from being scared half-to-death, my friend told me about the family that once lived in the house surrounded by the cornfield. She told me that one night the father came home drunk after spending the evening in town. They had a newborn baby who wouldn’t stop crying. After an hour of listening to the constant screams of the child, the father told his wife that he was going to go out on the porch to smoke a cigarette. But instead he went downstairs, grabbed a knife from the kitchen drawer, and went back upstairs and killed the baby. Then he killed his wife. As he made his way down the stairs he tripped and fell on the knife and ended up killing himself.

I have never been back to that house since.
